Where Time Slows Down: Unveiling the Charm of Bangalow
Discovering Bangalow in my Interstate 'One' motorhome

As a frequent town-hopper and lover of the road less travelled, my explorations have taken me to many corners of Australia. But it was on a Sunday in September that I found myself meandering towards Bangalow, nestled within the lush Byron Hinterland. Accompanied by the comforting hum of my campervan (the Interstate having become a faithful companion), we ventured off the beaten track to discover this newly recommended town.

Just a 15-minute drive from the shores of Byron Bay, Bangalow is a treasure that offers an escape to a world where boho chic meets old-world charm against a backdrop of rich, verdant landscapes. Here, amongst the rolling hills and quaint streets, you can truly experience the natural beauty for which the Northern Rivers region is celebrated.

Upon arrival, the town welcomed me with open arms, its atmosphere a unique blend of laid-back vibes and vibrant energy, its streets lined with vintage shop fronts, and its crisp September air infused with the fragrant aroma of freshly brewed coffee. The palm trees of Piccabeen Park gently swayed, as if waving hello, while lush rolling hills enveloped the town in an emerald embrace, creating a scene that felt like you were stepping into a living postcard.

The local charm of Bangalow

A stroll down the main street revealed the heart of the town’s charm. The Woods, a local café and arts district, offered a sanctuary where the flavours of the region were savoured alongside the creativity of its artisans. Here, amidst good food and coffee, the town’s bohemian vibe truly shines, a testament to the fusion of cultures that defines Bangalow. Friendly locals shared stories and laughter, embodying the warmth this town exudes.

My favourite café!
Yum!

The Bangalow Dining Room served as a reminder of the town's ability to blend sophistication with rustic charm, providing a dining experience that was both memorable and deeply rooted in local flavours.

The local Bangalow Markets, bursting with creativity from jewellery to clothing to furniture, offered a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells that captivated the senses. The markets are a must-visit, a place where the essence of Bangalow and its surrounding beauty comes to life in the products and smiles of its people.

Returning to my Interstate 'One' motorhome

Returning to the warmth of my van, I ventured further into the surrounds which took me to the doorstep of local macadamia farms, where the connection between land and people was palpable. At Duck Creek Macadamia farm, during harvest season tourists can forage, find, and crack open fresh macadamias against the backdrop of sprawling farms, a simple yet profound taste of the hinterland's bounty.

As my journey in Bangalow drew to a close, I realised that Bangalow is not just a destination; it is a journey into the heart of what makes the Northern Rivers region magical. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most memorable adventures are those that offer a glimpse into the soul of a place, inviting you to slow down, breathe and just be.

As I set off under the fading sky, Bangalow’s charm lingered in my thoughts – a melody of nature, culture and connection that promised to call me back. Until then, the open road beckons, with the promise of new stories to tell, as I continue to explore the unexplored corners of this beautiful country in my home away from home.
